What is kava?

Kava is a plant native to the South Pacific Islands, where it's been harvested and used for over 3000 years in traditional ceremonies, social gatherings and everyday life. Kava is used by harvesting the root and stump of the plant, which contains active compounds called kavalactones. Kavalactones provide a range of calming effects for your body and mind, without the addictive qualities and side effects of alcohol or pharmaceuticals.

What's different about Noble kava?

Here at FijiKava, we only cultivate, harvest and use Noble kava for our products. Why? Kava falls into two main categories; Noble and Tudei, which each have distinct characteristics. Tudei kava is often associated with hangover-like side-effects due high leevels of adverse chemical compounds, whereas Noble kava is considered safer for your enjoyment.

Is kava safe to consume?

Absolutely! Not only has kava been consumed by people within the Pacific Islands for centuries, it has been confirmed as safe by the World Health Organisation (WHO), when consumed responsibly and sourced from high-quality noble kava varities.

Kava is also meticulously standardised by the Fiji Kava Act of 2016, the Vanuata Kava Act of 2002 and the Codex Alimentarius Commission, ensuring all cultivation, processing, transportation and marketing of kava follows safe, fairtrade practices that benefit you and our farmers back in the Pacific Islands.

What does kava taste like?

Kava is completely natural drink, derived straight from the roots of the Noble kava plant. Because of this, it has a naturally earthy (powder form) and peppery taste (juice form) some drinkers take getting used to.

How you prepare your kava can also affect the taste. Ensure you're mixing your kava well and sticking to the recommended serving size (1 teaspoon per 200ml of liquid of your choice). Drink your kava quickly to avoid sediment settling, or stir between sips.

Can I mix my kava with anything to alter the taste?

Absolutely! While you'll get used to the naturally earthy taste of kava over time, it can be best enjoyed when mixed with sweeteners, juices and other mixers. Here are a few of our favourite methods:

Coconut water, Juices and milks. Blending your kava in with coconut milk or fresh juices can be a great way to add sweetness to your daily kava, or relaxation to your morning juice.

Natural sweeteners. If the peppery taste of kava bothers you, adding a natural sweetener like honey, agave or stevia can balance out the taste profile.

Chilling it. Serving kava cold can cut through the strong taste. Try refrigerating it or adding ice cubes before drinking.

Herbs and spices. Mixing yuor kava with natural spices like ginger and tumeric, or herbs like mint, can add new dimensions to your daily cup, and bring in powerful antioxidents for an all-in-one start to your day.

Chasers. A traditional method used in many kava ceremonies back in Fiji is to have a slice of citrus fruit, a bite of ginger or another small snack after drinking your kava to cleanse the palate.

How does kava effect your liver?

You may have heard some concerns about liver damage connected to kava. However, the real issue here is tied to specific types of kava called Tudei varieties, which have a compound called Flavokawain B (FKB) that's been linked to potential liver toxicity. At FijiKava, you’ll never find us using Tudei kava. Instead, we use only Noble kava varieties, which contain much lower levels of this compound and follow strict safety and quality standards.

As with anything, it's always a good idea to stick to the recommended dosage and check with your healthcare provider, especially if you're taking other medications or have health concerns. This helps ensure your kava experience is not only enjoyable, but also safe.
