Kava As A Natural Muscle Relaxant

Looking for some fitness and wellness now the New Year has started?

The relaxing effects of kava on the mind have been well covered. But did you know that kava is also a natural muscle relaxant, making it a safe and effective substitute for the commercially available medications – and ideal for use in the health, fitness and wellness industry.

Muscle relaxants are usually purchased from pharmacies or prescribed to help control pain or muscle spasms.
There are two major types of drugs used in this area: neuromuscular blockers which are often used during emergencies and in intensive care, and spasmolytics, which act on the central nervous system.

While they can be effective in reducing pain, there are several known and harmful potential side effects to some of the drugs; these include heart problems and paralysis.

Patients can also feel heavily sedated, less alert, confused or lethargic when taking these drugs, making it impossible to carry on normal daily duties like driving.

Other reported effects include constipation, blurred vision and dry mouth.

More is becoming known about the positive effects of the kavalactones present in kava root; when extracted using cold water extraction methods, as in traditionally prepared Fijian kava, the health benefits are plenty.
Chris Kilham from Fox News Health talks extensively about these properties in ‘Kava, Medicine Hunting in Paradise’ (1996, Park Street Press, pgs.. 103 – 104); he classes kava as a local anesthetic, a “first rate sedative”, an analgesic “superior to aspirin” and “an excellent muscle relaxant” which can “make the pain of an aching back, a sore neck, or any other cramped, sore, or injured muscle disappear.”
That’s quite a list for our favorite little plant.

Given the rise of the wellness industry and growing suspicion of pharmaceutical drugs as the be all and end all of health matters, there is a place for these health-giving and pain-relieving qualities of kava in spas and wellness centers; kava drinks could also be used in the juice bars of fitness clubs and gyms as a great “warm down” beverage for easing aching or sore muscles.

In fact kava is best used for easing aches of smooth muscle tissue rather than for problems caused by injuries where a stronger painkiller is usually required; so spas and fitness centers would be an ideal place to offer them, as supplements to workouts, massages, steam baths, aromatherapy, reiki, yoga and other wellness therapies.

As more and more people are prepared to try natural, herbal remedies as alternatives to popping pills and capsules, kava may have a big role to play once the message of its safety and effectiveness is more widely known.

Quite apart from the easing of aches and pains, of course it also helps people wind down and calm their minds after a long day at work.

So don’t be surprised to see Taki Mai by Fiji Kava supplements offered at your local health club in the near future!
